Google announced that its Android Market surpassed a number of 10 Billion downloaded apps for Android smartphones as of this December.

“One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads—with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can’t wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012.“, says Google’s Eric Chu.

With this impressive numbers, Google is fast pacing in order to gain on its main competitor, App Store, which in comparison to Google had 13 Billion Apps downloaded in the roughly same period of time (June 2010 – October 2011). On the other hand, Google benefits from a large number of manufacturers that have adopted the its open-source Android system, such as Samsung, LG and Motorola, just to name a few.

As a token of gratitude for its users, Google has partnered with some of the Android developers to roll out some new apps, such as: Asphalt 6 HD, Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, etc. The apps will be availible for the price of 10 cents each, as a celebration for this special milestone.

As Chris’s paratenon was playing up again, we’d agreed that I would cycle on ahead, whilst Chris rested and caught up via train later (easier said than done!)

On the morning of my first full day in Serbia, my speedo clocked over 7,000km. Now, all previous 1k marks have been on the road, pretty much in the middle of nowhere! But for this one I was in the Serbian town of Zitiste. The random Rocky statue was in the park in the middle of town, so he’s my backdrop for this one! Cheers Rocky!

From Zitiste, I headed South East towards Vrsac. The next town I rode through looked like a gypsy village- ram shackle houses, chickens and dogs roaming the streets, open tips and women washing clothes in tubs in the street. The first time I’ve seen one on my trip! If Borat is to be believed, maybe more in Romania?

Anyways, on from there it opened back out into wide expanses of farmland, mainly maize and sunflowers. With the sun out and little fluffy clouds, it made for a great ride! On approaching Vrsac, the mountain behind it came into view. I later found out there are 7 peaks, one with a castle on top!

The next photo was the sunset from my hotel window, looking out over Vrsac town centre. That evening I logged onto couchsurfing.com (I’d heard of it through other travellers: Van, Svetlana and Leoni in Lithuania) and luckily found Maya, a Vrsac resident, traveller and drummer!
Maya kindly showed me around her lovely town and introduced me to ‘Bureg’, ‘luto’ and pear brandy. We also hiked up the Vrsac mountains from where some awesome views out over the plain could be seen!
